Chotanagpur Law College, Ranchi was established in the year 1954 by the great visionary of his time late barrister S.K. Sahay who with his foresightedness envisioned an institution which would bring positive and dynamic changes in the tribally populated and economically poor regions of Eastern India and thereby bring stability, education, development and employment in their lives. It is one of the oldest and prime institution imparting Legal education in Jharkhand. The college was initially governed by BSUA( Bihar State Universities Act) and now since the formation of Jharkhand state in the year 2000, it is governed by Jharkhand State Universities Act, Statute no. 32. The Statute no. 32 constitutes the governing body of the college which comprises of a chairperson and six members each one from executive body, legislative body, ex-officio principal, teachers’ representative, University representative, a donor member and a prominent educationist of the state. The college is permanently affiliated body of Ranchi University, Ranchi and is also affiliated to BCI, New Delhi. The college offers three-year (Semester system) LL.B Program and a two-year Semester system LL.M (PG in law) program. The college follows the curriculum designed by the university which is in accordance with the Bar Council of India for legal education. The college offers 27 subjects in six semesters.
The college has safe, secure, lush green and environment friendly campus just at the scenic outskirts of Ranchi in a wide area of 4 acres. The college has a well-equipped digital friendly campus to undertake research, teaching and learning. The college runs on semester system and it lays great emphasis on academic as well as practical exposure to the budding young law professionals. CNLC aspires to be a role model for institutional excellence in highest legal education among the leading Institutions of the state in teaching, community service, legal awareness and capacity building. It aims to nurture socially responsible leaders and lawyers with the holistic approach to serve the state and the nation. CNLC aims at creating a just and humane society free from prejudices, superstitions, discrimination based on sex, religion, caste or economic status and to cultivate competence and efficiency along with character and integrity among the students. The college is committed to sculpting bright and committed individuals who are fully equipped with legal graduate’s attributes and employability. The college is a ground for judges, lawyers, legislators and public servants in the making which would form part of the governing system in the future. We endeavour to make thembest in whatever constructive they do and polish them into professional who would make amarkin legal area. CNLC has the vision to sincerely contribute to the social and economic development of thecommunity by rendering value-added education and to achieve this it continuouslyworkstowards creating responsible citizens who are receptive and contributive to the changes of thesociety.
CNLC has an enriched library with wide and exhaustive number of law textbooks, reference books, e-books, journals, and e-journals pertaining to academic curriculum of the college and also in areas beyond the curriculum. The library also has international journals and publications and also has a regular subscription of magazines and periodicals. To keep pace with the innovative needs of comprehensive aspects of teaching and learning the CNLC campus ensures Wi-Fi enability and has a separate a library with e-resources like manupatra, westlaw, lexis-nexis advance, SCC online etc, which are accessible to both faculties and students.
A library is the prime learning resource of an educational institution. CNLC is committed to give our students a well-equipped and efficient library. CNLC has a large reading room well-furnished to accommodate 80 students at a time and provide conducive environment for study. It is well stocked and presently has large collection of books and journals. New books, journals, reference books are continuously added to the collection of each year and a wide range of legal academic information and knowledge is added. The various maintenance activities like data entry, issue and renewal of books are maintained. CCTVs are installed in library area for surveillance purposes. The library is open to the students and faculties on all working days from morning 08:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additionally, the library uses KIOSK system.
